COURSE DESCRIPTION:  SSZ303: STREET LAW (2020)The Street Law (semester) course is an introduction to law and legal systems of the United States. 


The major focal points of this course include constitutional law, general legal principals, civil and criminal law, the courts, court procedures and civil rights. Additional topics may include family law, housing law and consumer law. Students engage in real-world experiences to deepen their personal understanding of government, individual rights, the legal system and legal disputes. 


These learning experiences are characterized by the use of case studies, mock trials, contemporary issues, current events and legal research and applied to students' everyday lives.Course Note: This course fulfills the Social Studies Elective (.5) requirement.

COURSE OUTLINE:  

 

12.G1  FOUNDATIONS of AMERICAN DEMOCRACY: The principles of American democracy are reflected in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and in the organization and actions of federal, state, and local government entities. The interpretation and application of American democratic principles continue to evolve and be debated.


 12.G1d THE RULE OF LAW :  a system in which no one, including government, is above the law. The United States legal system has evolved over time as the result of implementation and interpretation of common law, constitutional law, statutory law, and administrative regulations.


12.G2CIVILRIGHTSandCIVILLIBERTIES:TheUnitedStatesConstitutionaimstoprotect individual freedoms and rights that have been extended to more groups of people over time. These rights and freedoms continue to be debated, extended to additional people, and defined through judicial interpretation. In engaging in issues of civic debate, citizens act with an appreciation of differences and are able to participate in constructive dialogue with those who hold different perspectives.

Homework Policy:

Homework will be assigned at the instructor’s discretion as appropriate for specific course requirements.


Late Work Policy:

With a focus on students being self-directed learners, students are encouraged to be responsible for their own learning. All assigned work must be received by the teacher in accordance with due dates posted or as required on a weekly basis.  Late work may not receive full credit. The final deadline for all late work will be set by the individual teacher. 


Communication:

Students will be expected to interact with the teacher and classmates in a variety of ways to support instruction.  Teacher-student communications are conducted in a variety of ways, via the following technologies based upon need and availability: phone, email, instant message (IM), and web-conferencing.


Academic Integrity Policy:

The teacher expects all students to abide by ethical academic standards. Academic dishonesty—including plagiarism, cheating or copying the work of another, using technology for illicit purposes, or any unauthorized communication between students for the purpose of gaining advantage during an examination—is strictly prohibited.
